About Tip Calculator
A fast, no-fuss tip calculator for restaurants, bars, cafés, taxis and deliveries. Enter the bill, tap a quick gratuity preset (10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%) or type your own, and choose how many people are sharing the cheque. The tip amount, the grand total and the amount each person owes all update instantly, with a plain-English summary you can read aloud or copy to your clipboard. Amounts are tidily rounded to two decimal places, and dodgy inputs are handled gracefully — a blank or zero bill simply shows no result, and a party of fewer than one is treated as a single diner. It all runs in your browser: no sign-up, no limits, nothing uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
- How much should I tip?
- In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% common for good service and 20%+ for exceptional service. Counter service, takeaway and other situations vary by region and custom, so treat the presets as a starting point and adjust to taste.
- How is the tip amount calculated?
- The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, an 18% tip on a $60 bill is 60 × (18 ÷ 100) = $10.80, making the total $70.80.
- How do I split a bill with tip?
- Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide that total by the number of people. For a $70.80 total split between 3 people, each person pays 70.80 ÷ 3 = $23.60. This calculator does both steps for you as you type.
- Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
- Tipping etiquette is to calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount, since sales tax isn’t part of the service. Many people simply tip on the post-tax total for convenience — it’s a small difference. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount.
- How do I calculate a tip in my head?
- A handy shortcut: 10% is just the bill with the decimal point moved one place left (e.g. $46 → $4.60). Double it for 20%, or add half of the 10% figure for 15%. This tool removes the guesswork and splits the bill too.
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. Every calculation happens locally in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
